Portrait of the Nation: The Musical…?
This truss roof (which lowered the ceiling) was installed in the 1930s.
A view through the partially demolished roof.
The lift pit. The circular tube in the middle goes down 17 metres!
The concrete is proving very hard to shift!
Services coming through another part of the roof.
The library is carefully dismantled before reassembly downstairs
And last but not least, Jeff Thornton, the man in charge, with a handy saw.

How are you keeping the rain out? I did not realise this was a roof-off job!
Hello Blue Dog
Yes, over the main west galleries only. A temporary, water-tight crash deck has been formed at cornice / wall head height. (The contractors is standing on this “roof” in the picture.) We have had some wet weather at times but so far so good!
