Exchanging Faces
The Portrait Gallery may be empty but we haven’t stopped acquiring works of art. A couple of years ago we put on an exhibition called Entrepreneurial Scotland – photographs by Tricia Malley and Ross Gillespie of men and women who have succeeded in the world of business but are motivated to give something back to the community.

James Holloway, Director of the Portrait Gallery, and John Anderson of the Entrepreneurial Exchange with a newly acquired work by Tricia Malley and Ross Gillespie. Photograph by Ivon Bartholomew.
Yesterday we took possession of the 24 photographs that formed that exhibition. Our purchase very much helped by the generosity of the Entrepreneurial Exchange. The photo shows John Anderson from the Exchange handing me the photograph of Sir Tom Hunter, a man who not only has made millions but has given millions away. I remember years ago meeting him and his father in the Portrait Gallery.
The photos were taken on the front steps of the Portrait Gallery as inside is bare and forlorn. Apart from Richie Cumming’s young graffiti artists who seem to have established a camp on the ground floor. What they are doing is incredible but Richie will bring you up to date on that soon.
